Question

Illustrator on iPad crashes immediately when internet is turned on (iPadOS compatibility bug)

The recent updates have completely broken Illustrator on iPad, and Adobe Support is actively trying to cover it up instead of fixing the code. I am a professional Adobe Stock contributor, and I have been unable to work for half a month due to non-stop crashes during import and export.

When I contacted support, they literally told me to buy a new iPad because my 3GB RAM device is "no longer supported." This is an absolute lie and a scam. Adobe Fresco runs perfectly fine on the exact same device without a single crash! Furthermore, this forum is flooded with identical complaints from users with much newer iPad models. It is a massive software architecture bug, not a hardware issue.

Adobe is paralyzing professional creators who bring them content and profit. Fix this bug immediately, escalations to engineering are useless if you just ignore your customers!

    Hi everyone,

Thanks for staying with us on this. We're aware of the recent surge in reports about Illustrator crashing on iPads, particularly on the 9th generation model, and we're actively working with the product team to resolve it.

In the meantime, we've also noted that several users have reported the app working when switching to Airplane Mode - worth trying as a temporary workaround while we work on the fix.

The issue has already been escalated to the product team on an urgent basis, and I'll update this thread as soon as we have more information. Thanks for sharing the crash logs and for your patience - both are directly helping the team narrow down the cause.

Thank you, Anubhav. I really hope your team will find a solution that includes older iPad models as well, because we are completely locked out of our workflow.

Unfortunately, the Airplane Mode workaround does not work for me. Even in offline mode, Illustrator on my iPad still crashes and doesn't allow me to save anything at all. I am eagerly waiting for a real fix.

    Hi Anubhav,

This situation is completely unacceptable and catastrophic for my work.

Adobe writes about recognizing the status of valued Contributors, but with this latest update, the application instantly deprived me of the opportunity to work and draw for your platform. Why was there no warning for authors? Why does the application download an update that completely blocks the tool, without leaving an option to roll back to a stable version? This didn’t just change the system requirements; it completely paralyzed my workflow.

I am a professional vector illustrator from Ukraine. I DRAW everything by hand, investing my time and skills. There is a war in my country, and buying a new iPad right now is absolutely impossible for me. Moreover, my income as an author has dropped dramatically. You have cut off my only way to draw and earn a living. I am in complete despair and I don't know what to do. Drawing is my only source of income.

What am I supposed to do now? How am I supposed to create vectors for Adobe Stock if the software doesn't even allow me to save my hand-drawn files locally on my device anymore?

If this is a global bug that affects other devices as well, I demand that this case remain open and be resolved. If an update drops support for 3GB RAM devices, Adobe must provide contributors with a legacy, stable version of the app so we can continue to work.

I look forward to a real solution from the team, not just a link to the system requirements page.

I have the same problem. Both iOS and the app are updated, there is more than sufficient RAM and more than half empty storage on the ipad. The app had worked on the same device for a few years without issues. I haven’t touched the app for about a month; today - it crashes every time when an old or new project is open. When it turn off WiFi it work. Please let me know if I should upload the logs here, I hope this issue can be taken seriously and solved.

Thank you for sharing this! It proves that the issue is completely on Adobe's side, especially since turning off Wi-Fi changes the behavior. It has nothing to do with our hardware.

Please upload your crash logs (.ips) right away and share the link here for Community Manager Anubhav M, or send it to him via DM. Also, make sure to open an official support ticket and demand an escalation to the engineering team. The more logs they receive from different users, the faster they will be forced to fix this broken update. We need to push them together!

    Hello Anubhav,

Thank you for reaching out. Here is the link to my recent crash log file (.ips): https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1gQ8hzWEXw-4Si7VTsHGUwrUmpCBdL8RL?usp=sharing

This crash happens consistently every time I try to import or export files. Please note that I have already provided these technical details and logs to the standard support team under active ticket ADB-45643208-P433, but unfortunately, they kept insisting on hardware limitations instead of analyzing the software failure.

I deeply appreciate you taking over this investigation to push it to the engineering team. Looking forward to your updates.

    Best regards,
    Liudmyla

    Hello @Люда+Лисак

We understand how frustrating it can be to experience crashes in Illustrator, especially in the middle of work. Could you kindly share the crash report so that we can investigate this further:

    • Open iPad Settings > Privacy & Security > Analytics & Improvements > Analytics Data. You will see file names like “Illustrator-2023-01-03-083327.ips” (2023-01-03 is the date in the log & 083327 is the time). Ensure you share the recent log file after the crash by looking at the timestamp.
    • Upload the file to a file-sharing service of your choice and share a link to the file here or via DM.

Looking forward to hearing from you.
    Anubhav
