Is it possible to live draw patterns on ipad?

I am interested in live drawing patterns in illustraitor using the pattern "repeat" tool on ipad, but every time I add one brush mark in the pattern, illustraitor exits out of the "repeat" layer and starts drawing outside of it, thus not repeating the drawing I'm doing. Are there settings I need to change to acheive this?
