Text Missing Only When Viewed From .indd File

Had something weird happen for the first time tonight. Our designer, working in inDesign, notices entire sections of text were missing from his file. Seemingly randomly, we can't quite figure out why some are gone and others arent. When I open the .indd file in inCopy, I see the same thing, whether I'm looking in Layout Story or Galley views—The text frames and assignments still exist, but random assignments are just blank, with no text at all. But when I close the .indd file and open either the .icma file or the .icml file for the supposedly blank assignment, all the copy is still there. Anyone have any idea whats going on? I'm thankful the copy still exists somewhere but we're really hoping we don't need to redesign it all.

My first piece of advice is to stop using assignments. There's no need to use them in such a small group and it just adds a layer of complexity that serves no real purpose.

Just open the INDD file in InCopy and work that way.

Hey Bob, circling back on this quickly.

"Just open the INDD file in InCopy and work that way."

So, I have been opening the .indd in InCopy. But you still need to "Add All [whatever] to Assignment" in InDesign first, right? Otherwise, when I open a .indd file in inCopy without doing that, I'm told "Because this document contains no InCopy stories, Galley View and Story View are not available."

Is there something I'm missing that could make this simpler?

No you don't need to "Add All to Assignment" -- instead, you need to choose Edit > InCopy > Export > All Stories. Then at the Export dialog, navigate to where the parent InDesign file is and create a folder called something like "stories".  Target that folder before you click Save/Export. When you're using a Layout workflow instead of an Assignment workflow you just have to be careful at this step to choose where the linked ICML stories should go. (Using Assignments, it does it automatically.) But I agree w/Bob, don't use Assignments, way more hassle than they're worth.
