Question

4 ways Groups are broken/working illogically

Not sure if this is new behaviour after the latest update. Two weird group behaviours I noticed:

1. When I have items inside a group and select 2 of them and press command+g, it does nothing. However when I put them inside a group outside of that group and then drag the group inside the other group it does that without any issues. It also works when I select multiple groups and press command+g.

2. When a group is minimized in the layer panel, I can't drag anything inside of it. While the expected behaviour would be that anything dragged onto a closed layer/group would place that item on top within the layer/group, OR expand the layer/group so it can be placed inside.

3. When I have a group selected and place a new object, it doesn't place it inside the group but on top of it. Even though I double clicked the object so I was actually inside the group. That makes 0 zense. Would be nice to at least have the option to change that behaviour.

4. Why is it a single click to change the group name and not double click (like in other software?) Double clicking in the layer panel doesn't seem to do anything now.

Hi @Trancilian,

I completely understand how confusing and frustrating it can be. Could you please confirm the exact version of InDesign and your operating system details? I tested this in InDesign version 19.5.5, 20.5 and the latest 21.0, and the grouping functionality seems to behave the same way in all three without any noticeable change.

It would really help if you could share a short screen recording showing what's happening on your end, so I can take a closer look and check it further.

Looking forward to your update.

Abhishek

I can try to record some examples tomorrow on both windows and Mac and if possible will try to install an older version as well. Thank you for your assistance, it's much appreciated

Hi @Trancilian,

Just checking in to see if you had a chance to record and share the examples you mentioned. I'd be happy to take a look once you have them ready and check this further.

Looking forward to your update.

Abhishek
