A few of pages are generated as the empty page in the exported PDF file from time to time

Hi,

Like the discussion title, when I try to generate my INDD file to PDF via the Export to PDF function of InDesign, a few of pages are generated as the empty page.

  • This happens from time to time (not always), even though I perform it with same file. (For example, if I retry to generate the PDF file without any amendment in the INDD file, this problem is fixed.)
  • Here, "empty page" means that all object is not shown on those pages - doesn't mean that the objects moves to the next pages.

Surely, regenerating can be solution. But, sometimes, these empty pages are found by the client after the file was delivered, and this has been caused by the client's complaint.

Could you teach me;

  • this malfunction is just a kind of InDesign bug which has been reported?
  • if it is not a bug, which properties I should check and how I can fix it?

Regards,

Danny

Even if they find a bug in that version of InDesign it won't get fixed there. Try it with CC2019.

    Hi Danny,

every exported PDF should be preflighted with Acrobat Pro.

Through Acrobat's Preflight function and also visually.

Surely, before we deliver the file to the client, we've run Preflight on Acrobat DC. But it does not show these empty pages as the error.

    Hi Danny,

then you have to configure Acrobat's Preflight accordingly.

There is a "Page is empty" check:

Definitely a serious bug, but I've never experienced an issue like this.

    A few questions first:

    • What version of InDesign are you using, what build, and what operating system?
    • When you experience the issue, when you try to replicate the fault, does the blank page occur in the same place, somewhere else, or it rectifies itself?
    • Have you taken any measures to try and remedy the problem yourself, such as restart the application, reinstall of the software, or the dreaded "trash your preferences" suggestion I'm sure my learned colleagues will make in this thread?
    • Are you in a position to share a file that is known to make this fault?

Bugs can be reported to Adobe InDesign Feedback  but upon doing a quick search, I couldn't see that a bug of this description had been filed.

Please find my answer from below:

    • We are using Adobe CCT version. Current build of InDesign to be installed is 11.4.1.102 x64, and OS is Windows 7.
    • When this problem was found, we replicated an experiment on exporting PDF repeatedly at 12 times. But we could not find any same problem. (Therefore, I cannot be sure whether the blank pages are placed in the same place.)
    • Actually, we met this problem twice. First was found on Emily's system during last year, and second was found on Andrew's system in this morning. (InDesign build and OS are same on both systems.)
    • To report this to Adobe, I've already prepared all files to be related with this issue - INDD/Used graphic/joboption/PDF(Problem&Fixed) files.

Definitely file the bug at that URL I put in my first post. When you file a bug, there is an option to attach a file.

I've encountered similar issues when previewing the PDF, but it turns out that the PDF was taking its sweet time redrawing the page, and that the content was actually there. In your circumstances, definitely include the PDF with the blank pages with the bug report.
