Adobe InDesign 2026 – Renaming Files in a Book Without Breaking Cross-References

Environment: Adobe InDesign 2026, Book file with multiple documents and cross-references between separate INDD files.

Has anyone successfully renamed Book documents while preserving cross-reference destinations, or is there a recommended workflow for this scenario?

You have a problem here: the book panel doesn’t let you rename documents, you’ll have to rename the document outside the book, remove it from the book, and insert the renamed document as a new one. Therefore cross-references that link to the renamed document will be broken.

Renaming can be scripted -- maybe such a script already exists.
