Adobe InDesign CC2019 Lagging on Macbook pro

Hello,

I am currently operating adobe indesign cc2019 on a 15'' macbook pro. Recently I have found that basic tasks cause a loading effect, making the app pretty unusable. Thinking the problem was my laptop, I contacted apple and we ran through several tests. In the end, the support team member concluded that it must be a bug with indesign, as they said they found that 19 people had reported the same problem. Has anyone else experienced this, and if so, do you know how to fix it? I am up-to-date with software on my laptop, and it doesn't seem to be an issue with storage, cpu or memory.

Hi there,

Thanks for reaching out. That does not sound like a generic experience with InDesign. I would request if you can share a few more details like:

  • OS (Exact version of MAC OSX)
  • Version of InDesign (Make sure you have the latest build (V14.0.2) installed.
  • When did this start happening? Are there any recent changes made to your system? For example, any antivirus, system updates or web extensions installed recently.
  • What is your normal workflow when you notice this lag. From where(Network Drive/ System HDD/ Shared Folder on System /External HDD) you access your file?
  • Do you see this lag on new files as well?
  • Do you have Suitcase fusion installed on your system? If yes, please try removing it from InDesign Plugins folder and let us know if that helps.

Looking forward to your response!

Regards,

Srishti

Hey Srishti,

Thank you so much for your response! To answer your question:

- My Mac OS is MacOS Mojave, 10.14.5 (18F203)

- I have the latest version of InDesign installed (V14.0.2)

- It started happening about a week ago, and I can't think of any changes to my system - it happened a few hours into some work I was doing on my Mac.

- I'm not sure what you mean when you say from where you access your file - I just go to my documents and work through the folders to get to it.

- I've been working on one main project only in InDesign, and have noticed significant lag with it. However, this project includes a variety of files. Some contain big files which I know can slow the software down (however, can it slow down tasks like scrolling, or moving a text box?) but I noticed the lag happening even when I'm trying to set up a new document.

- As far as I'm aware, I do not have Suitcase fusion installed on my system. I have no idea what that is!

Many thanks

Marge

Reset your InDesign preferences:

Close InDesign. Then hold down Ctrl + Alt + Shift (Windows) or Cmd + Ctrl + Opt + Shift (Mac), and relaunch InDesign. Respond in the affirmative to the dialog asking if you really want to replace the preferences.

Turning off Pre-flight and changing Display Performance to Typical can help.

Increasing memory to 16GB or more will also help.

In any case, I would also suggest that occasionally do a Save As and incrementally rename your document (Name 1a, Name 1b and so on) this will clear out the crud that builds up (and also give you a version to revert to should things go disastrously wrong with your current file!).

If, in the InDesign forum webpage upper left you click into the Filter, you might type the word "slow" and uncover many, many posts. Most discuss resetting preferences as a first try.
