Question

Adobe InDesign crashes when trying to create new document. InDesign 2024, v 19.3, Mac OS Monterey, OS 12.7.6, on Mac Pro (late 2013)

Adobe InDesign crashes when trying to create new document.

InDesign 2024, v 19.3, Mac OS Monterey, OS 12.7.6, on Mac Pro (late 2013)

Have started Mac in safe mode, then re-booted normal. Launched InDesign, opens exisitng file ok, but when trying to create new document it crashes. Have deleted manually the Adobe InDesign cache folder from Libraries, re-booted and still the same.

Any advice please.

Had been on holiday and trying to work now after pause and this is happening...

thank you leo, am not able to find InDesign 2025 in any of my options on Creative Cloud app - only one available is my 19.3 version (2024) and 21.6 (2026) which is not compatible with my OS Monterey.

To update to more recent versions I will have to buy new hardware and new OS which am not happy to do.

btw - when I copied the crash report to send to Adobe I got this message, see screengrab

it doesn’t offer you an option to update to 19.5.5?

    InDesign 2024, v 19.3

And also update to the latest version of InDesign 2024, version 19.5.5, if Creative Cloud app still lets you do that.

Am not getting the option for version 19.5.5 anywhere in my Creative Cloud app, have checked and the CC app itself is up-to-date

    Also, if this problem continues:

Since you can open existing files, just use the following workaround: open an existing document, save as, delete everything, use this doc as a starting point for all new docs. Because nothing will be fixed in InDesign 2024 anymore, as you know anyway.

Also, you can try to create a new clean admin account in System Settings > Users & Groups and work from there.

In addition to caches, try resetting preferences:

    https://www.rockymountaintraining.com/adobe-indesign-rebuilding-preferences-cache/

Also, make sure Full Disk Access is granted to InDesign in System Settings > Security & Privacy.

    Will it make a difference?

Hi Leo, many thanks for that. Had already gone through the various steps on your site before that, except the last ones - ref rebuilding the cache files, which have done now since.

I have now also granted full disk access to Indesign in System Settings.

Have now renamed the cache file as per your instruction, but not sure about the Library/Preferences/Adobe InDesign folder?

    - as this was appearing the same way? so not sure what to change there.

Had shut down the mac and since restarted, tested InDesign - same result i.e. crashes as soon as I want to “create New Document”

I have saved the crash report and can upload here if that would be of any help?

Unlikely. Although if you wish you can attach it as a text file (or link to it), just don’t copy-paste it in the message.

Also, try to install InDesign 2025 (just make sure to uncheck the option to remove old versions as you won’t be able to install InDesign 2024 anymore if you need that version specifically). InDesign 2025 should still be compatible with your system. Will it have the same problem?

but not sure about the Library/Preferences/Adobe InDesign folder?

Just use the ‘reset preferences’ button in Preferences > General.

Just in case: it’s not my site, the credit goes to @Barb Binder.

Do you have any 3rd party scripts/extensions? When does it crash, saving a new document or right after creating it?

InDesign was working perfectly before I went on holidays, it is now crashing the moment I want to create new document.

No 3rd part extensions/scripts before I went on holiday and none since.
