Adobe InDesign Project Performance Issue with Azure File Share

As part of our recent migration of the network file share to Azure, we have observed a performance issue impacting our Adobe InDesign projects when accessing the Azure File Share using the SMB protocol.

Users have reported experiencing significantly slower speeds, particularly when working on Adobe InDesign projects saved in the Azure file share. The most significant challenge arises when attempting to link images from the server to the InDesign projects, leading to notable slowdowns.

To ensure an efficient and productive workflow, we seek assistance in addressing these performance issues with Adobe InDesign and Azure File Share. Please advise on the most effective methods to resolve this issue or any recommended improvements to optimize performance.

The users have updated their applications to the most recent update as well.

Hi @Ashley32660933hj54,

Thank you for reaching out. We would request you to please share a few more details like-

  1. Is it happening with the specific operation? Like adding (aka placing) an image in the document, opening a document, or scrolling pages in the document.
  2. Any specific file extensions out of all image formats InDesign supports.
  3. Is the image taking more time to add to the InDesign document compared to opening it in the Mac Preview app or adding it to a Word document? If yes, does it make a difference for you if the same file is first opened in Preview and later added in InDesign?

There can be various reasons for files taking a lot of time when opened from a server location.
Before getting into details of what can be improved in n/w file handling, we can start with trying out a few workarounds to see if that helps with any improvement for you.

    Workaround 1:
Change Display Performance to Typical Display
Change Display Performance to Typical Display. On high-resolution displays, it is High high-quality display by default.
An option is available Under the View Menu. View > Display Performance > Typical Display.
    Workaround 2: Preflight
Turn OFF the preflight from the bottom bar. (It is ON by default)
Workaround 3: Turn OFF the links preference.
It is available in the ID preferences dialog.
InDesign > Preferences: File Handling > Check Links Before Opening Documents. (It is ON by default)

Let us know if that helps.

Thanks,
Harshika
