Adobe Indesign Save Errors

We are having an issue with a macbook pro running Mac OS 26.6 trying to save files to our file share. We are getting this very unhelpful “InDesign is unable to save this file. We tried, but it appears to be damaged.” error message any time we try. Already tried changing to using SMB as our connection protocol, but no change. What’s really weird is a file does appear, but its zero bytes and crashes Indesign if you interact with it. Notably after the change from AFP to SMB we got a similar result, but the file was 1.7MB, opening it caused Indesign to crash, and we can’t delete it due to missing permissions apparently. Some help would be appreciated.

    Hi all,

We're sorry to hear that you're experiencing issues while saving files in InDesign. We understand how frustrating this can be, especially when it disrupts your workflow.

We'd like to inform you that this is a known issue affecting newly created files when saving them directly to a file server. However, opening, editing, and saving existing files on the server appear to work as expected.

A bug has already been logged with our product team, and they are actively investigating the issue. We'll keep you updated as soon as we have any new information or progress to share.

In the meantime, please try the following workaround:

Save the file locally on your machine first, and then manually move or copy it to the file server. This should help you continue working while the team investigates the issue.

We sincerely appreciate your patience and understanding as we work toward a resolution.

    Thanks,
    Harshika

    @Harshika Verma

    • The issur occur only saving files on network locations via InDesign
    • SMB v3 (Windows DFS (AD Domain)
    • Yes, we can work via unc path (SMB) via finder without any problems
    • saving the files local works without any problem

    Hi @BASTIAN380174317hy0,

Thank you for sharing the requested information. This is a known bug, and the team is currently working on it. Please try the workaround: Save the file locally on the machine and then move it to the server afterward.

Let us know if the workaround helps. Meanwhile, the team is resolving the issue.

    Thanks,

    Harshika

    Hi @BASTIAN380174317hy0,

Thank you for reaching out. We're sorry to hear that you're experiencing issues with InDesign. We understand how frustrating this can be, especially when it affects your workflow.

To help us narrow down the cause and investigate further, could you please confirm a few details?

    • Does the issue occur only when saving files to a remote network location, or does it also happen when saving files locally on your system?

    • Which version of SMB are you currently using?

    • Are you able to access the UNC path directly from your system, outside of InDesign?

    • Could you also try saving the file to a different network location or path and check whether the issue persists? This will help us determine if the problem is specific to a particular location.

We appreciate your patience and cooperation. Looking forward to your response, and we'll do our best to help you resolve this issue.

    Thanks,

    Harshika

@leo.r We have also the problem on our Macbook with 27.0.1. Our file share is mounted via smb.

    macOS 26.6 is Tahoe, right?

As you're able to save locally, I'd be inclined to investigate the network connection and permissions rather than assume the InDesign file is actually damaged.

    A few things worth checking:

Go to System Settings > Privacy & Security > Files & Folders and check whether InDesign has permission to access Network Volumes.

Check Full Disk Access for InDesign as well. You could try toggling it off and back on, then restarting InDesign.

In Finder, try creating, renaming and deleting a test file directly in the affected server folder.

Have your IT administrator check the server's share-level permissions, particularly whether InDesign can modify file permissions as well as create and write files.

Interestingly, I found another report of exactly this behaviour with macOS Tahoe and SMB shares, including the zero-byte files. In that case, InDesign was requesting additional permissions that the server was denying. Changing the SMB share-level permissions for the relevant user group resolved it.

Adobe has also acknowledged a wider bug involving InDesign saving to network shares, so this may be related.

    A couple of questions

What version of InDesign are you running? Is the file share hosted on a Windows server, a NAS or something else? And did this start immediately after updating macOS to 26.6?

What version of InDesign are you running? If you revert to an earlier version, does it make a difference: Creative Cloud app > InDesign > 3-dot menu > Other Versions

Are you able to locally save that file?

Yes, locally saving seems to be the only way to save it. The file has to be saved, then manually added to the server after Indesign has been closed.
