We're updating computers and software for Adobe. Have CS5 and going to most recent programs. What happens to old files? Will they open in newest versions?

Yes, generally speaking InDesign CS5 files should open on InDesign 2024. I would keep the CS5 computers around until you can confirm this. Do note that the files will be referencing old fonts—these will likey need to be updated. And be sure you copy all of the linked images over to the new computers—InDesign simplifies this when you use File > Package to copy the file with all of the assets to a new folder.

Thanks so much. We aren’t getting new computers per se. We’re updating the
internal cores for several and only getting one new one.

You should carefully check the system requirements. The horsepower needed for current versions of InDesign are much higher than CS5.
