Advice & info on changing from CS5 to the Creative Cloud version

I've been using Adobe's page layout programs since PageMaker way back when, moving to InDesign when it first came out and ugrading along the way. Until now CS5 has been working perfectly well for my needs.
However ... I've been running InDesign CS5 on Windows 10 and I think INDD is now becoming a little unstable. I'm getting the black screen of death while running it. My computer is relatively new and the drivers current, so I do suspect INDD is the issue because it's only when working in INDD that I get the black screen.
I'm thinking about subscribing to the INDD cloud version but am concerned about all my old files I use constantly as part of my daily work flow.
Will there any issues opening and using those files with the new version of INDD?
Is there much of a learning curve involved in transitioning up?
Sincerely appreciate any/all words of advice ... Thanks!

Hi TP:

is there anywhere else that gives more of an overview of all of the program's capabilities now?

Take a look at this document (created and published through InDesign). It shows the features added to each new version.

Thanks Barb, very useful. For some reason Firefox didn't display the paging arrows so I was stuck on the first page, but once I copied the URL into Explorer it worked fine. Have bookmarked the URL for reference.

Cheers and thanks all, I've subscribed now and look forward to exploring the new features.

Please keep in mind that any file you save in InDesign 2020 will not open in CS5. You can save an IDML but any new features will be lost or badly mangled and text will probably reflow differently.

Thanks, THAT is very important to know. Will keep archives of old files before I save them in the new version.

If you have a new computer with a recent OS you need to run InDesign 2020.

How much you will find improved over CS5 will depend on the kind of work to do.

New in CC are PDF forms, digital publishing to Reflowable and FXL ePubs and lots of smaller things like foot-notes, vertical rules, Adobe Fonts, Publish Online, Libraries, Paragraph Shading and so on. Quite a few changes.

Thank you so much. Some of that is Greek to me but never mind, the "smaller things" make sense 🙂

One last one (we hope), can I still keep the old version on my computer in case I need it?

Yes you can keep previous versions.

You might consider upgrading your InDesign skills as well, Linkedin Learning have several online video tutorials that you'd find helful (you can get 30-days free access): https://www.linkedin.com/learning/indesign-cc-2019-essential-training?trk=learning-serp_learning_search-card&upsellOrderOrigin=default_guest_learning

Hi there,

Thanks for reaching out. Files created in the older version can be opened in the newer version of InDesign. In case if there will be any issues with any specific file then we can also try saving the file as IDML and then we can try opening the document in 2020. For more information on InDesign 2020 new features you can refer to this help article: https://helpx.adobe.com/in/indesign/using/whats-new.html

Many thanks for your input. I've had a look at the linked page - is there anywhere else that gives more of an overview of all of the program's capabilities now? I don't get a sense of what more has been added to what I can do already, but I'm sure there's been a lot of improvements and enhancements ...

And a follow-up, if I may. What limitations does the free trial have that I should be aware of? Thanks!
