After updating to InDesign 2023 (v18.0), all files opens as "damaged"...

Hi...

This is a MAJOR problem for me.

After updating to InDesign 2023 (v18.0) (running on OS X Monterey), all files - as in every single one - opens with an error that says: "InDesign detected that the file "XXXXX" is damages. Would you like us to try to repair the file? The file will be temporarily processed on our servers".

And so it opens, okay, but most often the most recent corrections made to the job, is gone. This is really, REALLY bad.

When the "damaged/repaired" file is saved, closed and opened again, another warning appears: "Indesign detected that the file "XXXXX" is damaged. We have repaired the file, but some content may be missing. And then I'm recommended to "Save As".

And this happens again and again on all files - new, old, repaired, saved on NAS, saved on external drive, saved on local disk.

I have tried to reinstall InDesign 2022 - same result.

I have uninstalled/reinstalled 2023 - same result.

I have rebooted my Mac several times - same result.

If this only happened the first time, I opened a old 2022-version file, so be it - BUT... this happens E-V-E-R-Y time on E-V-E-R-Y S-I-N-G-L-E file!!!

My only solution right now is to work in .idml - but this is totally unsustainable - to say the least.

I don't know what to do - please advice.

Thank you for sharing the file. I checked and was able to open both the files. Would you mind saving it locally and then try again?

I've lost 12 months of work. And, NO, resetting Preferences does not fix the problem! Is there a fix that actually works to solve this problem?

Hi Marcus...
I could have sworn, that I had left a note about my own easy fix, but I now realize, that I did not do that - sorry.
But - my problem was not with the preferences file - yes, it gave a very temporary fix - not a permanent one.

Finally I - by absolute chance - figured out, that it was my custom keyboard shortcuts set, that triggered the error and messed everything up.
Still have absolutely NO idea as to why, but I can't argue with the result.

I went to "Edit/keyboard shortcuts" and made a new set - bingo bongo - the problem was gone!

Hope this works for you to - or at least it is a very non-invasive procedure, that won't harm anything and is easily reversible, if needed 😉
Have a nice day,
Jesper...

Thank you so much for the reply.

Unfortunately, it didn't work for me. What version of InDesign are you using?

Are the files saved on a remote, shared or cloud server? If yes, on which one.

On a Synology NAS, connecting via AFP.

Earlier tests ignored the placement of the file - they all behaved similarly on NAS, external drive and local drive.

This time around I didn't test that, I just deleted preferences again.

I have the same issue on my Synology NAS. All archived INDD files are damaged. No other assets in the folders are problematic. When I attempt to open the files, InDesign crashes, and the Preferenes reset themselves.

I've lost a whole year, and NOTHING has fixed the problem.

Any other workarounds?

This is not expected. Ok do one test, do you have another computer to test? Make a copy of your CC2022 file(not opened on the faulty CC2023 version at all) and try opening it on the other computer with CC2023. Does it still show the same behaviour? I suspect this has something to do with a malfunctioning InDesign installation or probably the files had some issues to start with, which aggravated by opening them in CC2023

Another thing you could try is export the file as IDML from CC2022 and then resave it as INDD. Then open this INDD in CC2023 and see how it goes. IDML is supposed to remove any corruption that might have crept in.

Hi Manan...

Thank you for taking the time to help - much appreciated!

I just tried to open the file on another Mac - also updated yesterday - and it worked just fine. Clearly it is a very local problem - and one is a very lonely number 😉

All my IDML tests returned the same damage error.

Maybe I should boot into recovery mode and test my HD?

Before you do that

Try resetting your preferences:
The easiest way to reset everything is to delete the InDesign preferences: as soon as InDesign starts to boot hold down Shift, Alt, Ctrl (and Apple/Cmd if working on a Macintosh). A dialog will appear asking to delete the InDesign Preferences, select 'Yes' on this dialog.
