Allow sequential numbering of items on the basis of visual order, not logical order

When you make a document with several diagrams with captions, and the captions are numbered ("Figure 1, 2, ..".) the labels get their number based on their 'logical' position in the document. Thus, when you use a mix of inline, anchored and free-floating images, the numbering gets all mixed up. The result is that you have to do all your images in a single mode, which creates a lot of unnecessary work (e.g. repositioning images when you have added some text, but the image could easily have been inline and flowed with the text).

The solution would be to create numbering not based on the logical location in the document structure, but the visual location.
