Question

Alternate Layout vs. Original Layout

I don't understand Alternate Layout: I created an Alternate Layout, then deleted the pages of my original layout, and am working with my Alternate Layout. I did a Save As and Saved it. Now I open up the new layout, which I like better, but can't Export certain pages: error message says: "Cannot find the specific pages...." How and where do I find the Original Layout to delete it so that my Alternate Layout becomes my one and only layout? Where did Original Layout go?

Hope this is clear, and thanks.

Bobbi

Sounds like you deleted the original pages so they are gone.

When you create alternate layouts they are set up as sections with the numbering starting at 1. Also the Pages panel lets you choose how the pages are viewed—Horizontally, Vertically, or By Alternate Layout. So, here I have two alternate layouts and have included a Section Prefix for both under Numbering & Section Options.

If I don't really need multiple sections and delete the unwanted alternate layout's pages, I can set the View pages to Vertical and under Preferences set Page Numbering to Absolute. Now when I Export or Print, I can use the panel's page numbers:

    Hi Bobbi,

it's likely that you do not address the pages to export in the right way.

If you want to export every page of your document simply tell InDesign "All" from the export menu.

Or if you like to do only a couple of pages you could do a special notation to address pages in "absolute" manor.

    Examples for absolute page addressing:

    +3-+6

That would export page 3 to 6 of your document regardless of names of the pages.

The third page to the sixth page in the document.

    +1-

That would export all pages from page 1 of the document to the last page.

    +6,+10

That would export pages 6 and 10 of your document regradless of names of the pages.

Can you show a screenshot of your Pages panel showing the Alternate Layout(s) and the export dialog where you do the page range?

    Regards,
    Uwe
