Alternate layouts / 'Place and link' conundrum

Hi, have been using ID's alternate layout function fairly regularly for outputting variants to social media sizes etc, but just bumped my head against something I'd assumed would be possible but now I'm not so sure.

Is it possible to crop, or Paste Into, shared content from one layout to an alternate layout within the same document, in a way that would frame the bit you need to a particular shape, and crop out the bits you don't want to show in that new layout? Won't seem to let me 'paste into' with shared content?

Hi, it's a number of indesign elements I'm trying to get into the frame - I seem to have got it to behave now (fingers crossed) - I think it was a question of placing linked elements on the new page, grouping them, copying that and then Paste Into the destination frame, but I'll double check that. Dunno if attached shows intention clearly...

Hi @H_Bert_1:

Are we talking pasting an image into a frame? Or maybe I shouldn't be guessing. Can you provide additional details on your workflow. Screenshots help tremendously!
