Animated objects

Very excited about using animation in ID for the first time. However, there are two problems.

Direct Selection tool

After watching a YouTube beginners video, I can't seem to use the Direct Selection tool to select one end of the motion path but instead have to resort to the Selection tool. The tutorial shows, in the case of difficulty in selecting the anchor point, to select the object itself if, say, extending it, but all mine does is directly select all the anchor points of the object. So the only way I've found it is to use the Selection tool then the Direct Selection to elongate it.

Fly in From Top rule

Secondly I would like to have a short rule start outside the top of the page flying down to a particular point on the page itself, but can't work out how to do it by adjusting the Motion Path. I've even tried drawing a path selecting both it and the rule/object and choosing Convert to Motion Path. The screenshot shows the blue rule starting outside the page and meant to fly down so that the top of it will be at the page top and the lower half slipping behind the three blue text lozenges:

Really stuck here, so all advice gratefully received.

So Installing In5 is the answer to my clinet wanting to post my animated brochure on their website?

You can try it (there's a free trial). It will absolutely give you better results than Publish Online and you'll have full control of the content.

I'm glad you got that to work.

I wanted to warn you about exporting animations. They will not export in an interactive PDF. They will usually work in an EPUB file or in Publish Online.

Here's a video which show some things that will work and will not when you're expoerting which may be helpful.

And, not to be too tiresome with the message, EPUB readers vary considerably; one might show the animations flawlessly, the next badly or not at all.

I am not sure why ID has such involved animation features, to be honest, when there isn't really a single solid, useful export format for them. Unless PO is going to grow and stabilize (no sure thing), I'd work up expertise in other animation tools instead.

Those features were added more than a decade ago for the purpose of exporting to Flash. They've never really been improved, just tweaked a bit.

Okay. After further tweaking and playing around with the Direct Selection tool it's now become accessible, and after moving the Fly-in rule to it's final spot and pulling up the Motion Path anchor point whilst setting Properties>Animate>To current location I think I may have it🤞. It's one of those things like with any new feature: just a case of experimenting with all the settings.
