Question

Annoying black boxes are back

I know others have posted in the past; I haven't seen any new posts on this in a while but last night, working with a file without underlines anywhere in it, i started getting the big black boxes appearing all over my file. i could zoom in and out and temporarily they would disappear but they kept coming back. checked another file, and it was ok. Now, this first file did have hyperlinks in it (set from the link panel) but they weren't underlined or anything.

Just wondering if anyone else was seeing this behavior and any possible workarounds. Thanks!

so, disabling the GPU like you suggested worked, but that's obviously a bug if you have to toggle off the hardware acceleration, which is one of the features Adobe touts. I wonder why it just suddenly started doing it, and if the just released OS update would fix it.

Hi @mojoprime,

Thank you for the update. I’m glad to hear that disabling the GPU performance has helped, though I understand how frustrating it is to lose out on hardware acceleration.

To help us further investigate, could you please upgrade your MAC OS to 14.6 and check if the issue persists. If still persists, please downgrade to InDesign version 19.4 and test if the issue is there. You can revert to this version in the CC Desktop app.

Additionally, If the problem continues, you might want to try deleting your InDesign cache and resetting its preferences as suggested by Barb here. You can follow the steps here. Let us know how it goes.

Best,

Abhishek Rao

Screenshots please.

How often are you doing Save As with a new name - or only Save? How big are your INDD files?

Can you try IDMLing? Export as IDML, open, save with a new name.

If you are on Mac - try to clear cache.

You can also reset preferences.

It's happening on other files, but only on the primary monitor. It flashes and disappears. Hard to work. How do I reset the cache for InDesign?

Hi @mojoprime:

What version of InDesign, exactly, and what operating system? Did the boxes begin reappearing after your most recent InDesign upgrade?

Sorry. 19.5 Mac Studio 2023 Ultra M2 Sonoma 14.5

They started appearing last night when i was working on an exisiting file that never showed the issue. Every time I try and grab and screenshot, they don't show in the screenshot. I would think a bad video card but it only shows in the InDesign window. But i can't seem to grab a screen shot. It's a black box/bars that flash over the screen and disappear. Last night it was worse, almost unusable. There is a QR code in the document, created in InDesign. I'll try to get a shot. Maybe a screen recording.
