Apple Silicon installer for InDesign

Hi All,

I just noticed that the Adobe apps like InDesign and PS installed on M1 Mac's are universal apps and not the Silicon versions. Is there any option to install the Silicon version only? If nothing else giving an option to install only one architecture would reduce the download/install size of the application. Is this possible?

There is not. The installer will install the universal version, which is Apple Silicon native. There is no option to exclude Intel binaries. I remember when the PowerPC Macs first shipped and there were universal binaries then, too. Hard drive space was at more of a premium then so someone created an app to strip 68K binaries from universal apps. I think it could save a few MB from some apps. I see no reason to do the same now.

Thanks for the link @Eugene Tyson,. However, my question is a bit different. The apps currently are delivered as a universal binary that has compiled code both for the Intel and ARM architecture. My question was if these is way to install just the binary for the arcitecture you are on, i.e. just the ARM build on the Apple Silicon Mac's

I searched but could not find any article defining differnnces between using an Universal app and an Intel/Silicon only app in terms of performance, battery etc. Maybe these unanswered queries are what's bothering me 🙂
