HI,

I use Indesign 2020 as a graphic designer for mainly catalogue and print ads. When I want to make an assembly for around 50% of my files I have an error pop up saying the the assembly is not possible to copy or link the files. Sometime it works and sometines it does not (either for files with 500 links than files with 5 links) and I check the files names as well.

Please help me  ;-))).

Cheers,

Nico

Hi Nicolas,

what's your exact version of your operating system?
And how is the external drive formatted? exFAT perhaps?

Today Drew reported an issue with PDF Export with an external disk that was formatted exFAT and OS X Catalina:

Hi,

I use Indesign 2020 with Mac OS mojave and the external driver is formated Microsoft NTFS.

I'm almost 100% that the issue comes from the external driver. I'll give some tries to day with different settings and let you know what i find.

Thanks,

Nico

Hi Nicolas, are you sure that the name links do not contain any “forbidden” character, as dot, slash and so on?

Bonjour Nicolas, es-tu certain que les noms des liens ne contiennent pas de caractères « interdits » tels que point, barre oblique ou autre ?

Hi guys,

Thanks for your feedback. Yes I mean the package command (as Jmlevy guessed I'm french and we call this tool "Assemblage".

I don't have any broken links and everything is green in my preflight panel. Yestersday I worked on a A4 ad with only 8 links to make a try and I check every single name to make sure i don't have a forbidden character, here is my links :

I tried several settings : I work from overseas with an external hard disk. With this A4 ad, I had link on both (the Mac and the hard disk) : when I wanted to package my file I had the "cannot cope the necessary linked file(s) errore message. I moved all mys link to the local Mac and tried again and then it worked. BUT it's very random, sometime the package command works very well and sometime it does not. And I don't imagine copying 500 links one by one for a big catalogue.

Do you have any suggestions ?

Thanks a lot for your help,

Nicolas

Take the periods out of the file names.

Are you referring to the file > package command?

I think so. In French the package command is named “assemblage” (and Nicolas is a French forename)

I don't know what you mean by "assembly", but can you post an image of the error message or give us the exact wording? Are the Links broken in the Links panel? Does the Preflight panel show errors?
