Question

Auto activate doesn't work, despite removing preferences

I have used Adobe Garamond Premier Pro for several years in a publication. Now when I open the document only a few of the font styles appear.  I have activated them by hand, but why won't auto activate work? It is selected in preferences.

Hi @Grundoon Groundhog,

Adding to all the great suggestions from the experts, I would also recommend trying to clearing the font cache, as this can often resolve font-related problems. You can follow the detailed steps here: https://adobe.ly/4dvgxX5

Please give these a try and let me know how it goes. Looking forward to your update!

I'm sorry, I find those instructions for clearing the font cache incomprehensible. Not everyone is a programmer. I went to the Utilities but there is no place to type anything in.

Now it seems like every font I've ever activated is appearing in the fonts list. This is true even of fonts I've removed in the Creative Cloud list.

I have Extensis Connect, but it is not open. I am using only Adobe fonts activated in Creative Cloud.

Adobe (not to mention Apple and/or Windows) should have a simple command for clearing the font  cache.

There are other problems which i will address in another post.

Along with agreeing with the above suggestions, make sure to check any subfolders named "Document fonts" which may have font duplicates. I wish it didn't add a third dimension to font confusion; but it can.

thanks. Just did a search for folders names 'Document Fonts." None of those apply.

@Grundoon Groundhog

Fonts are stored in multiple places - depends on the platform.

On Windows:

- System folder - c:\wondows\fonts\

- Adobe fonts folder - somewhere in the user's profile,

- "Document fonts" folder - next to your INDD file.

Hi @Grundoon Groundhog , Also see this thread:

Check Find/Replace Font and make sure you are not trying to mix Adobe Fonts (Activated from Adobe Fonts) with locally installed versions with the same name.

Thanks. I'm pretty sure I'm not (i wouldn't know how). How would I tell if it's a locally installed version? I've only activated with Adobe Fonts. Although I have literally thousands of fonts I've collected over the years, and use Extensis for the non Adobe fonts, maybe I"ll give it (Extensis) up.s

I have another question which I'll put into a new thread shortly.

@Grundoon Groundhog

You shouldn't have them all activated at the same time 😉

I think the best option is to either have them activated though Adobe Fonts option - and for all other fonts - copy manually to the "Document fonts" folder next to INDD file.

What exact version of InDesign and what operating system are you using? Is your Adobe Garamond an Adobe Font from Adobe's website or is it from a third party foundry? If it is an Adobe Font then try signing out of your Adobe account in the Creative Cloud Desktop app and then signing back in again. This has been known to clear up issues with Adobe fonts. Are you using a font manager? There have been some activation issues with Typeface font manager on a Mac. If you are using that one then you might want to try clearing the font cache. You can do that by first closing Typeface, then hold down the Option key while relaunching it, and choose "Clear Font Cache" from the support tools.
