AutoFlow and Font Issues

I have High Sierra 10.13.2, InDesign CC 13.0.1, and the latest update of Word 15.41(171205).  Something I noticed when importing a Word document is that if I hold down the ALT key, it will not AutoFlow and create all subsequent pages, as it has done in the past.  Instead, it places the first page and then I have to hit SHIFT-Click to get it to AutoFlow.  I also notice that the cursor looks strange in that the text is crowding the alignment box making it hard to see the AutoFlow symbol.

My second issue has to do with globally changing fonts.  In older versions of InDesign, if I wanted to change from Times New Roman to Simoncini Garamond, for example, it would change all instances of the font, including italicized and bolded words, keeping those attributes intact.  Now, when I try to make the change, it forces me to choose either Roman, Italic, or bolded.  So, of course it makes everything Roman, Italic or Bolded.  The only way I found to remedy this is to use the Find Font tool to go in and change the fonts.  If this was a deliberate change, it is decidedly NOT an improvement, as it slows down the workflow.

If anyone else has experienced this please advise if there is a fix.

Shift+click has always triggered fully Autoflow; not Alt, which is semi-autoflow.

As for the second issue, if you only use Paragraph Styles; they can be edited to change the font. If you consistently use character styles for bolds and italics, you will rarely, if ever, run into the second issue you describe.

Bear in mind that really old fonts should be expelled from your computer. Only use OpenType fonts. Old fonts that asked for Roman show that they are very old projects. They should be traded in on Regular as the Character Style.

What if you open old documents where paragraph and character styles were used little or not at all? Search for scripts that can analyze and build styles. Or build a set of styles and progressively use Find/Change dialog box to apply them.

    Makes a world of difference!
