Automatic Composite InDesign File From a Book?

Does anyone know if there is a script or plug-in that will create a composite InDesign document from an InDesign book?

Example: I have 9 documents arranged in a 24 page InDesign book, and I want InDesign to create a single InDesign document from that list.
It would be like the 'Export To PDF' function, but the end product would instead be a new 24 page InDesign document.

I know this 'assembly' can be done via a manual process, but its cumbersome.
Shouldn't this be an easy thing for InDesign to do?

Any thoughts or ideas are greatly appreciated.
