Baseline Grid and Hidden Characters

I'm trialing InDesign, and I am creating a document that will eventually become a PDF. I created a text frame with 2 columns and copy/pasted text into it, but when I "show baseline grids" they aren't "showing up".  The page is filled with black, and the text is white, so I changed the fill in the text frame to white and the text to black thinking that maybe the grids and characters weren't visible due to the dark background, but no...  Still can't see either paragraph marks or baseline grid.  What might I be doing wrong?

Thanks,

Jerry
