There are multiple possibilities here, and might not be related to working remotely via VPN.
What OS are you? Are you working InDesign files VPN or are you operating the InDesign app via something like CitrixServer?
First, you might examine your computer's screen pixel settings. If Windows, you might try setting the graphics display to 100% at a native monitor resolution.
