Question

Best solution for a reference list in book function?

So far I have a reference list at the end of each document in my book file, but I want to put it together in one at the end of the book. I have read around and it really seems InDesign does not let us make a reference list at the end of a book consisting of multiple documents. For instance this thread:

https://indesign.uservoice.com/forums/601021-adobe-indesign-feature-requests/suggestions/32082886-managing-multiple-sets-of-endnotes-in-a-document

I don't mind having to set up the lists again. But I would really appreciate a good tip on how to go about it? It could be very frustrating to do this completely manually. I'm asking here since it seems most threads end with people simply stating that the software should be able to do it but not mentioning known solutions.

InDesign has an indexing feature.

This is old but should still work

It seems to me that using Indexing for references would need quite a bit of tweaking. And if it is possible, then I wonder why other people haven't mentioned it in all the threads where people complain about the missing feature.

What I'm looking to do is to use Vancouver style references to remove elaborations and sources from the actual text. But maybe I should try and see if someone has made this work.

If it's Vancouver style - then can you can use Endnotes?

https://helpx.adobe.com/ie/indesign/how-to/add-endnotes-indesign.html#:~:text=To%20insert%20a%20new%20endnote,text%20on%20the%20Endnotes%20page.

However, for Book files Endnotes are not supported, for some reason.

There's a script here https://creativepro.com/files/kahrel/indesign/end-of-book_notes.html

Seems like what you need is the script to extract all the notes into a single document.

The above script might do the trick for you.

Not really sure how this will work out for you.
