    Hi @ClaireBeaumont

    Thanks for bringing this up.

I tested this on both Mac and Windows using the same text and the Arial Black font, and I was able to reproduce the difference in behavior. On my end, the Small Caps Height setting behaves differently between the two platforms in InDesign 21.4, 20.5.3, and even 19.5.5.

I'm currently checking this further with the product team to better understand whether this is expected behavior or an issue that needs investigation. I'll update this thread as soon as I have more information to share.

    Thanks for your patience.

    Hi @ClaireBeaumont

Thank you for your patience while I checked this further with the product team.

The expert @jmlevy  is 100% correct here. I was able to confirm the behavior on my end as well and further verified it across InDesign 21.4, 20.5.3, and 19.5.5 on Windows with multiple fonts like Agency FB, Segoe, Algerian and more.

The Small Caps Height setting under Preferences > Advanced Type only affects fonts that use synthetic (faux) small caps generated by InDesign. If a font provides true Small Caps glyphs, InDesign uses those glyphs directly and ignores the Small Caps Height preference, as the size of those characters is defined by the font designer.

In the case of Arial in my previous test, the behavior differs between macOS and Windows. On macOS, Arial does not provide true Small Caps glyphs, so InDesign generates faux small caps, and the Small Caps Height setting affects their size. On Windows, Arial provides true Small Caps glyphs, so InDesign uses those glyphs and changing the Small Caps Height preference has no effect.

I verified this through the Glyphs panel and observed the same behavior as described by the product team. Based on their investigation, this is expected behavior and not a bug in InDesign.

I hope this helps clarify the difference you're seeing between macOS and Windows.

Please let me know if you have any questions or if there's a specific font you're working with that you'd like me to check further.

    Thanks,
    Abhishek
