Bookmark tree for many documents

Hi,

 

I have a book that contains many files, and I want to export it into a single bookmarked PDF. Each chapter or subchapter headline is bookmarked, and I want them to appear at the correct level in the PDF - i.e., I want the bookmark for subchapter 1.1 to be nested under the bookmark for chapter 1, and chapter 1.1.1 to be nested under chapter 1.1 etc. The purpose of the bookmarks is to create a table of contents.

However, most of the chapters are composed of seperate files, so that in each file, the bookmarks automatically begin from the first level.

What is the best way to create the bookmark tree with the correct bookmark levels/hierarchy across several/all files?

I think you're describing a TOC, Table of Contents.

You can set up a TOC for a book that will include the specified paragraphs (headings) by style name. Look under Layout, Table of Contents.

 

There are a number of options that pertain to PDF output, and others in the actual PDF export menu, that tie it all together. You will need to place the TOC in your document, usually in the first section or one created for it. in the TOC menu, you will want to be sure 'Include Book Documents' is checked. I think you have to have the Book file open for this feature to be enabled.

 

Follow up on "Table of Contents" in help and features and ask away if the solution isn't clear. Setting up the included styles and hierarchy is pretty straightforward but might have confusing points.
