[BRANCHED] InDesign CC2018 - Spell check not working.

"As is often the case, the answer is simple. I find a lot of people jump to things like entering code in the terminal and the like. I had the problem and someone posted that You simply have to be in preview mode. "w" (when your cursor is not typing text, otherwise escape then w) will bring it up. Presto, dynamic spell check is working."

NOT ANSWERED!

That has nothing to do with the Spell Check actually working, that is merely changing the display to show or not show misspelled words.

In my recently installed/updated version of InDesign CC 2018 (13.1 x64) the spell check does not work: when nothing is selected on a page with a number of text boxes with erroneous text (e.g. "afgsafdgv fdsvs fasdfsav", or filled with Lorem Ipsum placeholder text) >>  I click Edit >> Spelling >> Check Spelling (or Ctrl I) and apparently nothing is misspelled. Come on Adobe even Quark Express (sic) had a spell check that worked - for that matter so did Wordstar back in the 80's. Please fix immediately to save all our time.

    Correct answer richardhcoffey

Apart from the comment "I will be dollars to donuts that this is user error." being unnecessarily rude I believe I have found the solution.

After the install of Version 13.1 InDesign, the Preferences for Spelling were automatically installed with the check-box under 'Find' for 'Misspelled Words' is unchecked. As this is never something I've had to adjust before, I wasn't aware that you could configure your spell check not to search for misspelled words - I can't understand why that would ever be necessary.

So, make sure that this checkbox is checked for the spell check to actually check for misspelled words:

Thank you for encouraging me to re-read the the Preferences and find the solution.

Those options are provided for customization purposes. I notice that Uncapitalized Sentences seems to be checked for you which given the rarity of that would probably make it seem as if the spell check wasn't working at all. I'm glad that all is working for you now.

I just checked with my own version of Version 13.1 InDesign and the spell check works just fine when I use it with greeked text. It actually checks every word. So since that is the case for me and since I have not seen a rash of complaints about this as a problem for others it might be safe to assume that there is something specific to your system. Please be specific as to your exact situation including your operating system and exactly how you're going about attempting to spell check. It would also be helpful if you post screen shots of the Spelling section of your InDesign preferences and also what your paragraph panel looks like, specifically what language is set there. Also, as Bob said, please let us know what language your version of InDesign is set for.

Bill, I was asking what language the text was set to. If there’s no language assigned, InDesign will not spell check it. We also don’t know what options were chosen as far as what to check. If it’s set to selection but there’s nothing selected, well, it’s not going to check anything.

I will be dollars to donuts that this is user error.

You replied to a four year old post in a thread with various solutions to spell check not working.

To keep things clear, I'm branching this to a new discussion.

For starters, please tell us what language is assigned to the text and what options are selected in the spell check dialog.
