same with placing illustrator files, they get imported, but have a white box behind them, i have Icond that are white outlines only and i want to place these in a design with Data-merge, the placing itself goed without problems, but the icon shows up as a white rectangle, the size of the trim-box.

no clue how to solve this.

    Never Mind, I found it...

The opacity level of the object in question WAS set to be "Multiply" in illustrator for some unclear reason.

Changed it to "Normal" and it shows up!

Here's Bob's solution, step by step:

Before executing the Data Merge, set "sticky" Place/Import options...

    1. Choose File > Place, tick the Show Import Options checkbox, and target one of the Illustrator files in question. Click Open.
    2. In the Import Options dialog, tick the Transparent Background checkbox and click OK.
    3. Click with the loaded cursor to land the placed graphic, then tap Delete.
    4. Repeat #2 above, but this time un-tick the Show Import Options checkbox.
    5. Repeat #3 above.

Now try the Data Merge again.

Hmm, i tried what you said, but now, when i run the Merge, i see nothing at all...

Could it have to do anything with the fact that The Icon in question is a white outline and white fill on a transparent background.

The Weird thing is, when i drag the container over to the pasteboard, The Icon is there, But when placed back on the artboard, it is like it has effect set to Multiply. but It doesn't seem to be...

Is there a way to add a wetransfer-link here. so you can take a look aty vwhat might be the problem?

PLEASE! Do not hijack or re-open years old posts. I've branched this to a new discussion.

Place an AI file and make sure to show options. Choose transparent background. You can delete it after it's been placed.

Those options are sticky and should work with a data merge.
