Bug report: Display corruption with transparency/blend effects when using Wacom Intuos stylus
Hi!
When working in InDesign with elements using transparency (opacity) and/or blend modes (e.g. Multiply), the display corrupts intermittently: affected elements suddenly render at low resolution and blend modes are ignored. The bug only occurs when using a Wacom Intuos stylus — trackpad and mouse do not trigger it.
Environment
- macOS: multiple versions over the years (currently latest)
- Hardware: multiple MacBook Pro over the years (currently MacBook Pro M4 Pro, 48GB RAM)
- InDesign: multiple versions over the years (currently latest)
- Peripheral: Wacom Intuos M, using stylus button in "Pan/Zoom" or "Zoom" mode
- GPU acceleration: tested both enabled and disabled — bug occurs in both cases
Steps to reproduce
1. Open any InDesign document containing at least one element with reduced opacity and/or a blend mode (e.g. Multiply)
2. Connect Wacom Intuos, configure stylus button to "Pan/Zoom" or "Zoom" mode
3. Work normally — navigate, move elements, adjust opacity
4. Use the stylus button to zoom or pan
5. After a variable amount of time (seconds to minutes), the display corrupts: transparency and blend effects on affected elements break, elements render as opaque and low-resolution
Expected behavior
Elements with opacity and blend modes should display correctly at all times regardless of input device or navigation method.
Actual behavior
Display randomly corrupts: transparency is ignored, blend modes (e.g. Multiply) are no longer rendered, affected elements appear low-resolution. Closing and reopening the document temporarily fixes the issue until it occurs again.
Confirmed factors
- Bug only occurs with Wacom stylus input — not reproducible with trackpad or mouse
- Stylus button in "Pan/Zoom" and "Zoom" modes both trigger the bug
- GPU acceleration enabled or disabled makes no difference
- Bug persists across complete reinstalls of InDesign, Creative Cloud, and Wacom drivers
- Bug persists across multiple machines and multiple macOS versions
- Document itself is not corrupted — display returns to normal after closing and reopening
Workaround
Close and reopen the document. Temporary fix only — bug reoccurs within the same session.
Additional notes
The Wacom Intuos has been the only constant hardware element across all affected configurations. The bug has been present for several years. Wacom drivers were fully uninstalled and reinstalled using the official Wacom uninstaller on multiple occasions without resolving the issue. All other applications (Photoshop, Illustrator, etc.) work correctly with the same stylus button modes.
