Bullets have vanished

Hello, I am working on a document for a client. It was already set up in InDesign and the orginal designer had used manual bullets. To speed up formatting I set up a paragrah and charater style for the bullets and applied this style to the work i was doing in the doc. Now for some reason the orginal designer can see the manual bullets they placed in the doc. They can see the ones I had added, but not thiers. Strangely I can still see all the bullets added by me and them. Can anyone shed light on why this has happened?
