Can I cross-reference information from a Data Merge?

I am creating a print directory for a community, and was able to successfully do the data merge with styling of the information.

However, typically in the upper corner of these print directories, you reference the last names of both the first and last entries on any given page. Is there a way to pull from the data source or the already merged data this particular information without negatively affecting the already merged data?

I would use text variables to do this, so the content needs to have paragraph &/or character styles applied to do this.

The Adobe InDesign help describes how to do this quite well: Learn how to number pages, chapters, and sections in InDesign

If the answer wasn't in my post, perhaps it might be on my blog at colecandoo!
