I found that the hardcover version of my letter-sized softcover is only 8.25" wide. The tabs in the margin need to be .125" narrower. I prefer not to change the tabs' image because that will also change the softcover version.
So I want to narrow the tab art, save it as a new image file, and replace it in one step rather than going through each page. Is that possible? Thanks.
Once you've made the change to your image in Photoshop you will be able to update all instances of the image globally in the Links Panel in InDesign. You will see a yellow triangle icon next to the name of the image in question which will appear as a folder in the Links Panel list (if you click on the rotated "v" icon to the left of the image name the folder will open and show all instances of the image in your document). Clicking on the image's name at the folder level and then clicking the double arrow icon at the bottom of the links panel will update all instances. However, by default, InDesign will try and enlarge the image to make up for the part that you have deleted. You can prevent this in the File Handling section of InDesign's preferences. If you uncheck "Preserve Image Dimensions When Relinking" then InDesign will not try and make the enlargement and will leave the image at the same percentage scale (presumably 100%) that you had it originally just with the new narrowness that you have created.
