Can single page number variables be tracked as pages are rearranged, not just in table of contents?

  1. I have a magazine-type layout in inDesign and it has a table of contents page and that works fine.
  2. I also have a "highlights" page with a number of photos, highlighting images on certain pages in the magazine.
  3. Each of these images has a page number superimposed on it corresponding to the page it is on.

Is there any way to make that superimposed page number a variable that will change to keep matching that page as the pages are moved and rearranged?

Otherwise all of these superimposed page numbers will have to be manually updated, last minute when the page order is finalized. It would be great if there was some way to just have them automatically update.

I can think of a number of ways, the simplest of which might be to thread the frame with the photo to the text frame containing the actual story being referenced, then add a Next Page Number marker.

A screen grab of what this page looks like would help, I think.

I can't really explain why, but that actually worked. I have no idea how you figured that out."

The explanation: Next Page and Previous Page variables look into the next or the previous text frame of a threaded story and report the page number on which that frame is on. That's it. If you use the text variable in a text frame that is not threaded to another one, the variables reflect the current page number.

No problem. See the little black boxes with the "00" in them by the photos? Those are the pages those projects are on, but the pages move around a lot.
