Can't crop placed Illustrator artwork

Auto-fit is *NOT checked. When I use the selection tool (black arrow) on placed illustrator artwork and drag the frame handle it now resizes (squashes it) rather than crops. I would never want to resize a placed object that way, ever. I am not holding down any keys, but even if I do it causes resizing and not cropping. It is maddening as there is no longer any way to crop Illustrator art that I have copied and pasted into Indesign (version 18, 19, or 20). How do I get the ability to crop artwork back? Auto-Fit is *NOT checked and I have reset the preferences for Indesign. Still not working.

check Clipboard Handling preferences in both Illustrator and InDesign

Cropping does seem to work when I *place the entire Illustrator file into Indesign. However, most of my .ai files contain multiple assets and I would like the ability to *paste individual selections from Illustrator to Indesign. When I do that, there are now two new unwanted changes: I can't crop, and the direct selection tool (white arrow) selects individual paths in my Illustrator artwork. I have no interest in editing Illustrator files in Indesign, that's what I use Illustrator for. I'd like to get it back to the way it was: pasting Illustrator artwork without it being editable so I can crop it in Indesign.

Yes, that was the remedy. Thank you. I checked "Prefer PDF when pasting" and that solved it. I know many people recommend placing rather than pasting, but I prefer pasting for the reasons above. Thanks again!

You don't have this selected in Preferences by any chance:

No, the Content-Aware Fit option is also unchecked in preferences. Thanks. By the way, photos are croppable (and have that circular handle within the frame that allows me to move content separately from the frame. Illustrator artwork placed in Indesign no longer shows that handle (it used to, until now). The inability to crop only seems to be an issue when I place Illustrator artwork in Indesign, something I was able to do for 30+ years.
