Hi there,

I was part of the discussion about the undo problem on In Design, but for some reason when i click the link that comes to my email (Re: InDesign Undo history clears itself without user action) i am redirected to this page (https://community.adobe.com/community#M648723), what is the problem?

    Correct answer John T Smith

When the new forum was announced (about 2 months ago) it was stated that the old forum messages would be ‘frozen & copied’ ending in November to be translated into the new forum, and that the old forum messages from Nov to the change over date would be added later

    Thank You Barb Binder,

for letting us know this conversation was moved (but that old post from before Jan 27 will not be visible until mid March).

This is a rather business critical issue with Indesign:
Uncounted users stated, that the so called “Undo-History (Protocoll of recent steps)” erratically clears itself. No prediction is possible on how many steps will be “killed” from the protocoll.

    My Solution

Problem occurs (only?) with 16 Gb RAM computers running on Windows (on Mac everything seems stable). This was also true for my system environment. Problem turned up after an Update Pack of Win 11 (not after Update of Indesign!). So to me it looks like an issue of Windows vs Indesign.

Now, I can confirm the same experience like many other users:
After changing the set-up to 32 gb RAM the issue is gone now.

My IT Department changed my computer (as Leasing was running out anyway) to a 32 Gb RAM machine. Immediately, Indesign runs stable and undo-history is infinite again. I tried with some 100 steps - testing by moving an object to and fro for 1 minute with the arrow keys.

    Other Solutions
I did not try the Pre-Version of Indesign which was published here. I cannot make comments on this solving path.

I hope this issue is gonna be fixed soon for everybody else.

    Have a good one,
    Michael

Thank you, Barb Binder, for letting us know this conversation was moved (even though posts from before Jan 27 won’t be visible until mid-March).

This is a business-critical issue in InDesign. Many users have reported that the Undo History (recent steps protocol) clears itself unpredictably, with no way to know how many steps will be lost.

    My experience / solution:
The problem seems to occur (only?) on Windows systems with 16 GB RAM. On macOS, everything appears stable. In my case, the issue started after a Windows 11 update—not after an InDesign update—so it looks like a Windows/InDesign interaction.

After upgrading to a machine with 32 GB RAM, the issue disappeared completely. My IT department replaced my computer (leasing was ending anyway), and InDesign has been stable since. The undo history now behaves as expected—I tested over 100 steps by repeatedly moving an object for about a minute.

    Other solutions:
I did not test the pre-release version of InDesign mentioned here, so I can’t comment on that approach.

I hope this gets fixed soon for everyone else.

    Have a good one,
    Michael

    Hi Mario:

This is the InDesign Discussions page. Please bookmark it.

The forums were updated to new hosting software early yesterday morning (Jan 27, 2026). Old posts were migrated to this new InDesign discussions page, but posts made between the end of November and Jan 26 will not be migrated over until March. This means that your thread is currently unavailable and won’t be visible again until sometime in March.

Someone has already restarted the discussion on the Undo issue:

New “can’t undo” comments can go on that thread. If you wish to continue any other conversations, just post it as a new question.

Hi @Marios342806572bbb: It was in a pinned post at the top of the InDesign Community page in December and January, but you are in good company. Most people didn’t read it. LOL

@Marios342806572bbb I can’t explain it, but you should be posting your Adobe InDesign question here instead in the Adobe InDesign

    https://community.adobe.com/indesign-669

Unfortunately, due to a forum glitch, we can’t move your post.
