Can't get book document to start on verso

I'm working on a book in which the first part of the Front Matter ends on page 13; the Foreword starts on page 14, but no matter what I do I can't get it to start on the verso. The document before ends correctly on the recto, and I've been all over the book and document numbering options and nothing will force this document to move to the verso.

I've attached the document in question and a screenshot of the book file. Any help is appreciated!

Correct answer Susan Culligan

The weird thing is that all the other chapters are starting correctly. Our publisher has adopted the bizarre method of starting chapters on the next page regardless if it's a recto or verso, so many chapters begin on even numbers and hence on the verso. The Foreword, which starts on page 14, is the only chapter that I can't get to start correctly. From your screenshot it looks like you got it to shift to the left; if so,, can you send me back the Indesign file?

Yay! Your tip about "allow selected pages to shift" did the trick. I had to move them around a little but was able to get them in the proper position.

Thanks, as always!

In the Book panel menu is an option for the process to add blank left pages to start each chapter on a right page. Be sure it's disabled.

Thanks James, I double-checked and that option was not selected (see Book numbering window attached). I even applied Continue on next odd page then switched back to see if it would nudge the chapter to obey, but it's still starting on the recto. Any other ideas? I've attached the InDesign file if that helps.

Prior answer was away from my desk and a bit brief, sorry.

It looks as if the Book has the numbering updatred correctly... so exactly what is the error? Does that second section, the Foreword, actually skip page xiv and begin on xv? I don't think I've ever seen a mismatch between Book numbering and actual output. How odd.

Your file has xiv as a recto page. Try this: check Allow Selected Spread to Shuffle (in the Pages pane menu), and drag the second page to form a spread with the first —

I don't think the Book processing will convert a recto page to a verso, as you seem to be expecting. It finds the next page to be recto and away it goes.

Youi may need to go through as many of the chapters as necessary to make sure the pages are actually ordered/begin as what they should be. I think ID expects chapters to begin on a verso page so you have to be explicit about setting them up if you need this verso-start.
