Can't open documents from computer backup

My old Macbook Pro laptop died (manufacturing error) and I managed to get it all backed up on a hardrive.

I had a very old version of InDesign that wouldn't work on my new Macbook Pro so I purchased the Adobe suite and installed Indesign.

Now when I try to open files off the hardrive it comes up with a screen saying

'Cannot open the document "Sandisk:Backups.backupdb:Kate's Macbook Pro :2022-09-14-153432:Macintosh

HD:Users (file name).indd". You may not have permission or the document may be open already.

Any clues to fix? I run a small business and all my client work is on the hardrive 😞

Check the filesizes if it's too small, we could have a case of the files being corrupt or not valid.

The other thing to check is for .idlk files in this folder, this is a lock file that marks that the INDD file is open and if InDesign see's it while opening the file it presumes that the file is open and gives a message. If you find .idlk file in the folder delete it and then try.

Copy that file to root folder of hdd and rename to 1.indd

Is it helps?

Remember, never say you can't do something in InDesign, it's always just a question of finding the right workaround to get the job done. © David Blatner

Thank you! Deleting the .idlk worked.

Delete all lock files you can find near the INDD files.

You can also try copying the file to your new computer
