Question

Can't open INDT (idesign template) files after the 2026 update.

Hi everyone,

The issue is straightforward. Apart from the regular problems we are all experiencing with the bugginess of each new update of indesign - this time it seems like mine can't open a single idnesign template I've made in 2025. Force quitting, computer restarts and re-installing indesign from scratch - tried everything to no avail. Anybody else experiences a similar issue lately? Any fixes? I'm operating on the latest Mac OS.

Many many many thanks in advance for any smallest suggestion that might take me out of this misery.

O bytes wouldn't tend to happen on its own. That sounds like a file copying or network problem. Do you have a backup to work from? Are you working from a cloud-based resource that needs to be set to "Make Available Offline"?

Hi @komnen9993821,

Thanks for sharing this. I tested the same workflow by creating an INDT in InDesign 2025 and opening it in 2026, and it opened normally for me, so the behavior you're running into shouldn't be happening. To understand what might be causing it, could you please confirm the exact macOS version and the specific InDesign 2026 build you're using, whether it’s 21.0, 21.0.1, or 21.0.2. It would also be helpful to know if the template opens correctly after duplicating it and changing the extension to IDML or INDD, to verify that the content loads properly. If possible, please share one of the affected 2025-created templates so I can test it here. You can send it via DM using any cloud-sharing service if it contains confidential content.

Let me know how it goes.

Abhishek

Hi! thank you so much for your response. After several more attempts I noticed that the INDT in questions had 0 bytes in them, which is why they didn't open, I think. Problem is, however - these files were just fine a month or two ago when I last worked on them and its bizarre for them to empty out randomly without any reason. No crushes or problems of similar kind happened to those files before. Has this been encountered before perhaps and there is a way to avoid them?

Thanks!
