Can't open master pages

Hello, I am new to InDesign CC but highly experienced with InDesign in general. Something odd is going on. I created 2 master pages for a document I am working on.  I decided to edit one of them so I went to the Pages panel and dbl clicked on the master page I wanted to edit.  Absolutely nothing happens that I can tell. My past experience with InDesign prior to this version has the master page opening for editing with a double click.  Is there something I am missing?  I tried to search here and google but could not find the answer.

Is this behavior limited to this particular document or across all documents? I wouldn't try any sweeping solutions unless we figure out if we are trying to fix the application or a specific file. If it's just this file, try saving as an IDML file, then re-opening the file. Was this a newly-created file, or updated from an older version?

OK, it gets odder. I found out that I can access the master page using LAYOUT>GO TO PAGE and then selecting the master page.  Now I can't get out of master pages to the document without using GO TO PAGE.  It seems the pages panel is not working at all.

If inDesign is not working properly maybe you should try resetting your InDesign Preferences.

Can you tell me how to do that?  In 10+ years I have never had to.  Is this a CC thing?   This is my very first document in InDesign CC.  Not feeling confident.  Is it always this quirky? Dang.  Maybe I want to go back to CS4 land.
