Can't resize objects or text with selection tool

InDesign 2023 (18.1) on the Mac. Been working fine until today.

 

I can no longer scale text or images using the selection tool. This is the most basic function that should work. I can't imagine why anyone doesn't want to be able to resize on the fly. I can see having a choice between scaling line thickness ...

 

I have quit all other programs, and no change.

I have reset all dialog boxes. No change.

I have wasted a few hours now, not being able to work, because of what should be a simple function.

 

I'm sure there is a simple "fix". I just wonder why this happens at least twice every year, regardless of version, and regardless of other apps where there could be a conflict.

If restarting InDesign and/or your computer doesn't fix weird behaviour, a resetting of the preferences often does the trick.

I should add that I can't constrain objects and text when scaling, which unless you don't care for your text or object to not maintain the original proportion, is not working.

I had to restart my computer again to get this simple function to work. After startup, I ONLY selected InDesign, and it worked. Started launching apps I normally need, one at a time, testing after each ... still good.
