Cannot thread to text frame on another page anymore

InDesign version used: 19.2 on MacOS

Since several months (might even be close to a year) I cannot thread text to an existing textframe on another page anymore.

When I click the out port of a textframe and go to a different page (not in the same spread), existing text frames are not detected by the tool (anymore).
The cursor does not change when it's over the new textframe and on clicking it, it creates a new text frame instead of linking it.

What does work:

  • thread to an existing text frame on the same page, or page on the same spread
  • thread to a different page, creating a new text frame

Did something change in an update, or is this a bug?

Are you trying to thread anchored frames, by any chance? You can't do that. Anchored elements are inherently single items restricted to a single page.

If a document is not behaving well then try

File>Export

Choose IDML

Open the IDML in InDesign
Save the file as a new InDesign file with a new name
See if the issue persists.

Try resetting your preferences:

Windows: Start InDesign, and then press Shift+Ctrl+Alt. Click Yes when asked if you want to delete preference files.
macOS: While pressing Shift+Option+Command+Control, start InDesign. Click Yes when asked if you want to delete preference files.
A dialog will appear asking to delete the InDesign Preferences, select 'Yes' on this dialog.

Reinstalling rarely fixes everything - you can do a complete reinstall using the

Thanks for the follow up.

In version 19.3 threading text frames does indeed work like it did in the past.
So I'm glad it is fixed.

Saving to another document, converting to idml etc didn't work. I haven't tried to trash the preference file. But it looks like it's fixed now, so case closed.
