Anytime you mix a new OS with old software (7+ years old in this case) is generally a bad comination. Catalina dropped 32-bit software support. While Photoshop and Illustrator CS6 were 64-bit, they have other issues: AI still requires some 32-bit operation and won't work; Photoshop should work but will be dicey. InDesign was still 32-bit and won't work at all.

You can either:

  • Upgrade to Creative Cloud.
  • Switch software (Affinity for example), or
  • Downgrade your OS (google "how to downgrade Catalina")

Yea I feel your pain. Running into a similar issue. I keep reading that Apple warned people for a couple of years, however, I have always worked on OS X and have never seen the warning. But I was working on High Sierra before upgrading.

My problem is not CS6 but that I have a design shop with several older macs that are stuck on sierra and can't upgrade to the newest version of InDesign. I just started upgrading my macs one by one but the first one with Catalina is causing problems as it only runs the newer version of InDesign. So I either downgrade to Mojave or spend around $20k to upgrade all my macs at once. Makes you want to pull your hair out!

Thank you for your reply. But to upgrade, I will need to purchase the upgrade to creative cloud right?

That is correct.

Sadly, InDesign CS6 is an old 32-bit application which will not run under Catalina. Apple has been warning its customers of this a couple years ahead:
