change user dictionary in a document after it's created

I have a document that was created with US English as its default dictionary.

I want to spell-check it with the UK Englsh dictionary and although I can select UK English in the user dictionary panel, it doesn't make any difference and reverts to US English as soon as I close the panel.

The same happens in reverse: With UK English as my default dictionay, any document created will be fixed to US English for spell-checking and selecting UK English has no effect.

Is there a way to change a document's "default" dictionary after it's created?

Hello David,

Dictionaries are actually part of the character platte. Which means differnt character can have different dictionarys applied to it. I would guess this is so medical or legal journals can be assigned different dictionaries when needed.

For you to have a "default" just change your paragraph styles or select all your text and change it to the desired dictionary. You'll  find after this the spell check will have changed.
