Chapter-specific endnotes, at END of book

Hi all, I'm new to Indesign.

I'm compiling a collection of short stories and would like to have endnotes.

The default for this would be all the end-notes for the entire book appearing in one big numbered list.

Is there any way to split the endnotes so that they are Chapter-specific - or in my case story-specific, starting at 1 again for each story?

Thanks for any advice.

Correct answer Laubender

You could then move the text frames of the endnotes to the end of your document if you like.

Best do not copy/paste! Just move at least the first text frame with the endnotes of every "chapter" to the end of the document. Do not thread the different endnote start text frames to one story. Keep them separate endnote stories.

Thank you so much, that's brilliant - works a charm, and the hyperlinks still work too 🙂

Is there any way to navigate the hyperlinked endnotes while working in indesign? For example when i add an endnote, obviously it takes me to the endnote frame - but then the only way to get back to the origin of the endnote is to manually scroll there. And vice versa if i see an existing endnote reference in the text and want to quickly check the endnote, then return back to the main text.

Hi David,

if every of your short stories is a thread of text frames ( an InDesign story ), then yes.

Look into Type > Endnote Options. There is a Scope option that can be switched from Document ( default ) to Stories:
