Chapters in a book as a single file

I'm a book designer of a few year's standing and have, since I started using InDesign, used 'Book' to set up chapters in illustrated books for print. Recently, and for the first time, I have been asked to supply a book of some 288 pages, as a single file rather than in chapters and I don't know why. There are a number reasons why I am reluctant to query the publisher directly, although I will if I have to.

Does anyone know why this should be? Does it have something to do with producing e-books or the printing method? Be interested to know of any views, thank you.

If your publisher accepts PDF files, then it's an easy thing to export a single PDF from the book panel.

Firstly thank you for your input on my query. I normally supply hi-res pdfs to my clients without any problems. In this instance though the publisher request I send them complete InDesign files. This I did, in 'Book' format i.e. in chapters. The message then came back that, in future, would I please supply the book as a single file rather than in 'Book' format and it is this I don't understand. What is the advantage to the publisher, I would have though this made everything more difficult to handle at their end.

Sounds like your client has picked a publisher who can't work with PDF which is a big red flag. I would advise the client that a PDF workflow is industry standard and that you cannot be responsible for any errors introduced by the publisher working with your .indd files.

Since they said in future they want a single file I'm guessing they send a single file for imposition and want you to do the work of consolidation for them. If you have to work withthem again, I would say it's safer for you to combine the chapters than let them do it, but as I said above, this is NOT a good workflow and your clinet needs to know it.

Hi @SJRiegel:

As per @SJRiegel's correct answer: click underneath the list to deselect the chapters and choose Export Book to PDF from the book document's panel menu to export the book to a single PDF.
