Clipping Mask Issues in InDesign 2018

I'm trying to mask a photo with a vector shape created in InDesign. Specifically, it's a compound path made from circles arranged in a grid pattern. I've tried all the ways I've used in the past (copy fill and paste into, etc) and nothing seems to work. Thanks!

Hi All. Thanks for your help. I've tried all of your suggestions to no avail. I have done this successfully many times before, but the program is behaving strangely since the update. I cannot release the compound shape for example. Neither can I specify content as Graphic or otherwise, all of the options are greyed-out. In the past I've simply layered the object over the image (fill) and selected "Make Clipping Mask" from the drop down under Object. I've restarted the app and my computer. The shape is nothing unsusual or overly complex. I've used the same technique on complex outlied text with no issues many times. Something has definitely changed in this update. Thanks!

In InDesign? We must be using very different versions...

In my world, in InDesign  you can copy to clipboard some image, object, group of objects, or whatever, and Paste Into a selected shape. There's no even such a term as 'Clipping Mask'.

My mistake. You are correct, that specific feature is in Illustrator. That said, I have used InDesign before to do the same thing I'm trying to do here many, many times before.

Select the compound path. Choose Object > Content > Graphic to make sure that it is a graphic frame.

Let us know if that fixes the problem.

Would the type of Content really matter?

I could Paste Into an 'Unassigned' or a 'Text' type of content.

It shouldn't matter, but there may be something unusual about this particular compound shape.

Perhaps releasing the compound shape and then re-making the compound shape would help. It's hard to say what's wrong without actually examining the shape.

How about including before and after screen captures to help us out. You can use the Insert Image button in the forum editor to show them.

There's nothing new in CC 2018 that should affect that.

I'd start by restoring your InDesign preferences. Here's how:

Trash, Replace, Reset, or Restore the application Preferences

Thanks for your help. There isn't an after to show, unfortunately, because nothing happens. Something has definitely changed in this update because I was able to do this earlier in the day, before I updated the CC apps. The option to "Release Compound Path" is no longer available, neither is "Paste Into" when I'm working in this file.

Most of the commands and techniques you mention belong to Illustrator, and never were available in InDesign. Are you in the right forum?
