Column inch calculation

Hello, I purchased a 177 year old weekly newspaper a couple of years ago. Our paginator uses InDesign to lay it out each week.  It would help us a lot of InDesign could calculate how many column inches are left on each page after we add our advertisers. Does InDesign have a way to calculate column inches on each page? If so, can it show how many column inches are remaining on each page after we start inserting articles? thanks you and Happy New Year.

I'd bet this could be scripted, and make a minor side bet that a script already exists.

...maybe. Calculating the length of text frames is trivial; not sure if anything scriptable can measure empty space in frames. But one of the script wizards here, or someone who's used such a script, is likely to check in shortly.
