Question

Command + n and other shortcuts don’t work after program start

Hi everybody,

For quite a while a bug in InDesign is bothering me: right after starting the application keyboard-Shortcuts cmd + n, cmd + o etc do not work and I have to use the Menu to open or create documents. After the first document has been opened or created all shortcuts work fine again.

I already tried clearing library/caches & preferences, closed startup-items and reinstalled InDesign but could not resolve the problem. working with MacOS Catalina 10.15.7 on an iMac with wireless keynoard.

Many Thanks for hints,

Michael

Same. This has been broken for me since 2020...

Currently using a fresh install of 2021 on a new computer. Surprised bug is still here.

It's not a bug for everyone.

  • Go to Edit > Keyboard Shortcuts to see if they were changed
  • Go to the File menu: the assigned shortcuts will be to the right New and Open (the two mentioned)

Are they there for you? If not, we need to help you fix the shortcuts. If they are, another application has taken over the shortcuts.

  • Shut down your computer and reboot. Launch only InDesign. Do the shortcuts work now?
You might need to check to see if any applications run on startup and launch without them.

Let us know what you find.

Hi Jane,

checked all your suggestions above: no shortcuts were changed, bug still exists when no other application or startup item is running.

Again: very strange is that the Keyboard shortcuts do work after a doc was created or opened once via menubar.

Many Thanks

Which version of InDesign?

Have you looked under the Edit menu at Keyboard Shortcuts... to see if those shortcuts have been allocated by another application?

InDesign 16.1 and no Keyboard Shortcuts allocated to another application (... which would also not explain why it works after the first doc was opened via menubar)
